Last updated on April 10th, 2019 White chocolate cardamom blondies flecked with brown butter and slathered with tart grapefruit cream cheese frosting. And sprinkles, of course. Back when I detested all things chocolate (I know), I used to tell people that my favorite cookie was “my mom’s chocolate chip cookies, but without the chocolate chips.” What is…

Peppermint Chocolate Marshmallow Cookies
Last updated on December 9th, 2019 Do you ever completely brush off very obvious warning signs for trouble, insisting “it’ll be fine” but then it’s definitely not fine? We’ve all ignored the weather channel’s rain prediction, leaving the umbrella and sensible shoes behind because it looked SO IMPOSSIBLY SUNNY, right? Halfway through making a test batch of these…
Gluten-Free Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies
Last updated on March 27th, 2020 These gluten-free pumpkin chocolate chip cookies have crisp edges and moist chewy centers. Studded the hazelnuts for crunch, they’re the perfect fall cookie! I can multitask at a lot of things. Stirring the soup with a baby on the hip while pausing to wash a few dishes with one…
Gluten-Free Mexican Chocolate Buckwheat Muffins
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 I nailed this recipe on the first try. The crumb was moist and chewy with just the right balance of sweetness to rich dark cocoa. But then I mom-brained and didn’t write it down (kinda like when I didn’t write the bin number on my bag of sliced almonds tonight because I planned…
Apple, Cheddar, & Caramelized Onion Galettes with Gluten-Free Buckwheat Crust
Last updated on August 29th, 2020 Today’s recipe celebrates two strong, inspirational, nasty women and their badass cookbooks that just hit the shelves. The apple, cheddar, & caramelized onion galette combo comes from The Gourmet Kitchen by Jennifer from Savory Simple and I’ve paired it with the gluten-free buckwheat pastry crust from Alanna’s Alternative Baker cookbook. They’re…
Gluten-Free Cocoa Brownies with Hazelnuts + DIY Gift in a Jar
Last updated on December 20th, 2019 With Halloween out of the way, it’s not too early to start planning for the holidays is it? Yes. The answer is obviously yes. You’re probably still enjoying the occasional 75 degree picnic at the park and iced tea. I hear you – just bear with me. This isn’t like…
Chicken Pot Pie with Chestnut Biscuits
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 This warm and roasty chicken pot pie topped with chestnut biscuits is a tribute to the cutest new baby bowl to join Two Red Bowls. Today was officially Cynthia’s due date, but baby bowl just couldn’t wait to eat his mama’s cooking and came a little early! Welcome to this big strange world, baby bowl,…
Gluten-Free Sweet Amaranth Waffles with Spiced Chai Poached Pears
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 All week long, I look forward to brunch. Who’s with me? Sunday afternoon brunch with my hair still frazzled and jammies under my apron. The kind of slow Sunday where you prepare gluten-free sweet amaranth waffles flecked with cinnamon and nutmeg, while spiced chai poached pears simmer on the stove as topping.
Gluten-free Savory Amaranth Waffles
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 I wanted to wax poetic about these gluten-free savory amaranth waffles because they deserve a sonnet, but then I sliced open the tip of my index finger on the blade of the food processor today, which is proving challenging for typing. These waffles though.
Ginger Goat Cheese Cheesecake with Honey Roasted Figs & Hazelnuts + Alternative Baker Cookbook
Last updated on October 28th, 2020 In case you’re wondering when the best time to make friends with someone is, it’s right when they’re pitching a gluten-free baking cookbook to publishers. I know because that’s when I met Alanna. It’s also when I willingly accepted my new role as dessert taste tester, with a constant rotation of Alanna’s latest…
Ricotta Tomato Tart with Gluten-free Cornmeal Crust & Arugula Walnut Pesto
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 Does anyone else get severe produce anxiety? As much as I like the idea of a CSA, it hardcore stresses me out. Suddenly a crate full of arugula and what if I don’t have time to eat the arugula before the edges wilt and the whole bag gets slimy? What happens if…
Peach Cobbler with Brown Butter Chestnut Biscuits {gluten-free}
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 The day before we left for Minneapolis, my mom brought me a bag of peaches from her tree. I wish I could say this peach cobbler with brown butter chestnut biscuits was made from her peaches, but I’d be lying. I thought about saying it anyway – how would you ever know?…
Pepita Financiers with Nectarines {gluten-free & nut-free}
Last updated on August 2nd, 2019 I studied French for five years – from high school through college – but I still can’t say “financier” properly – 50% of the time it comes out with a harsh American R trailing behind. Fortunately these nut-free pepita financiers are much prettier and more delicate than the sound of their…
Gluten-Free Pistachio Rose Water Cake with Rose-Scented Strawberries
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 I used to be a kid who loved dirt. Over the 4th of July, I could camp by the lake for a week without a shower, not worrying about the crud under my fingernails or whatever was nesting in my hair. Back then we ate s’mores over the campfire every night. Twenty years…
Hazelnut Chestnut Crepes with Brie & Burnt Honey + Zoella Mae’s Homecoming
Our #cheesebabygirl made her way into the world 10 days ago, just a day past her due date. To her credit, she started to make her appearance at 4:30am on her due date, but then took her sweet sweet time (33 hours to be exact). So on February 7th at 1:24pm, Zoella Mae filled our hearts and made us a family of three. Living up to her #cheesebaby nickname, she weighed 8lbs 11oz and measured 21.25 inches long. It seems the key to baking a chunky baby is to spend your entire pregnancy eating cheese. It’s only fitting then that I saved these brie-filled hazelnut chestnut crepes to announce her arrival.
Cheddar Jalapeño Cornbread Waffles with Turkey Chile Con Queso Dip {gluten-free}
These cheddar jalapeño cornbread waffles almost didn’t happen in time. I hatched the idea and bought all of the ingredients a couple of weeks ago when my mom warned me that the Super Bowl was coming up. (Thanks for keeping me relevant, Mom.) But every time I thought about cooking, I found something else to do instead (ex. lay on the couch and watch Felicity reruns or eat leftover cake or nap with the cat). And then good friends like Alanna happened. The kind that show up at your house to help you get two recipes shot in preparation for #cheesebabygirl’s arrival. SHE EVEN DID MY DISHES, you guys. So you have Alanna and my mom to thank for today’s recipe.
Salted Bacon Fat Ginger Molasses Cookies {gluten-free}
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 I’m not about to let a holiday season slip by without sharing a recipe for the bacon-lover in your life. Admit it, you all know someone who is obsessed with bacon – why else would we mass produce bacon bandages, bacon toothpaste, bacon socks, and for all those bacon-pizza-cat-lovers: THIS?…
Salted Sorghum Molasses Pecan Pie with Orange Zest {gluten-free}
Last updated on April 8th, 2019 Though I’ve never hosted or even been to an official friendsgiving, Thanksgiving at my parents’ house always brings together a mishmash of friends and family around one table. It’s become expected that Lucas and I will bring friends home to Chico with us for the holidays, and, in my opinion, adding other people’s traditions…
Black Sesame Pumpkin Mochi Cake
Last updated on July 6th, 2020 To celebrate Halloween (aka pumpkin month) and getting the keys to our new house, I baked up two trays of this black sesame pumpkin mochi cake. Last Wednesday, we chowed on take-out and this mochi cake on folding chairs in our new (empty) house with our good friends Dane…
Spaghetti Squash Fritters with Dill Yogurt Sauce
Last updated on July 6th, 2020 For years we’ve talked about houses as though we could actually buy them. “We’d totally knock down this wall” or “we’d change the counter tops first thing.” Just dreaming, of course, but we could spend hours visually remodeling a house (and we have for our current rental). Finally these daydreams…
Vanilla Bean Haupia Coconut Pudding with Caramelized Plantains
Last updated on July 6th, 2020 In her retirement, my mom’s taking a painting class for seniors. Tonight she sent a group text to my brother, his fiancée, Lucas, and me asking us which of her new paintings we wanted to hang on our wall, with three pictures: an abstract teal and orange leafy painting, our ‘it’s a girl’…

Chestnut Dutch Baby with Caramelized Nectarines + Bonus Baking Sneak Peek
Last updated on August 2nd, 2019 You might have noticed I’ve been popping by here somewhat sporadically the past couple of months. I’ve been busy working on some behind-the-scenes baking that’s sucking all the energy out of me. Quite literally, actually. Before I tell you about this puffy golden chestnut dutch baby pancake, I’m excited to finally be able to share a sneak…
