Spiced Crock-pot pearsauce

With the husband asleep on the couch all weekend after getting his wisdom teeth yanked out, I spent two full days in the kitchen last weekend. It felt refreshing; usually this is the time of year when my friend Cas and I pull out the glitter and glue for a week-long craft-a-thon. Alas, Cas has…

Iced oatmeal pumpkin spiced cookies (gluten-free)

This week was a big first for me. My first time passing out candy to little people dressed in bizarre outfits. Earlier Halloween day, I was on the phone with my mom when my brother called her to ask how much candy he needed to buy – would he get trick or treaters? How many?…

Sparkling ginger apple punch with muddled cranberries

When we moved into our new place, we promised our friends that we’d throw a barbecue not long after. We also taped up our bathroom with blue painters tape with lofty plans of turning the walls gray. It’s been 7 months since we moved in and we have neither painted our bathroom nor had a…

Pumpkin pie rice crispy treats

Summer weather finally rolled in to the East Bay a couple of weeks ago. And just as quickly departed this week as chills of fall and early winter took over. A trip to the produce market confirmed what the crisp air indicated: summer 2013 was officially dead. Get your last few baskets of strawberries and…

Root beer float ice cream

There was a time when “suicide” was my fountain soda of choice. Because who doesn’t love Pepsi, Sprite, Fanta, Dr. Pepper and A&W Root Beer swirled into one? Heck, while you’re at it, toss in some over-sweetened pink lemonade and iced tea to really mix things up. At some point, though, your taste buds mature….

Triple chocolate gluten-free brownies

How many potlucks with piles of freshly baked flour-filled goodies must a person like me endure? Pure torture for the gluten-free, I say. The host of the last one boasted a brownie taste-test among the spread of chocolate-y confections. So what does one who can’t eat them do? Force-feed all the homemade treats to your…

Dashboard chocolate chip cookies (gluten-free!)

“Golly, it was hot this weekend!” said everyone everywhere. Usually it doesn’t hit the hundreds in Chico until August, but we’ve already survived three heat-wave weekends at my parents’ house. At least this time the pool wasn’t covered with a dance floor so we could hop on in after sweating through our tee-shirts. The day after…

Candied ginger peach sherbet

Now that we’ve moved into our new digs, there are nights when we just have to drive 25 minutes and have to wait another 25 minutes in line @ our favorite ice cream joint just to get a scoop of whoknowswhat. The menu changes each time we go, but it always, ALWAYS hits the spot. One…

Sesame peach mochi cookies

On each plate at the reception, we had a “Letter to the Bride & Groom” Madlib to entertain guests while we rushed to take as many pictures as possible in our now 20 minute cocktail “hour” that got cut short because of the shuttle snafu. We grabbed them all at the end of the night…

Strawberry lemon curd tart with gluten-free almond crust

I went to a dessert party last night. Every year during finals, my late advisor would host a dessert party at her home, bringing together people from all different academic communities for a night of relaxation, strange drinks, chocolate fondue, and ice cream sundaes. To continue this tradition, her research group hosted the same party in…

  • Waffles make the best dessert. These gluten-free grids are flavored with chamomile and topped with a hot pink blood orange glaze and a dollop of whipped cream. If you don’t have chamomile on hand, skip it and add more vanilla! Search “chamomile waffles” on snixykitchen.com for the recipe!

My Valentine’s (@lucasmenanix) flight home from his week in Reno, NV for work got cancelled due to the storm. He’s currently 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 he can catch a flight to San Jose where his drive home in traffic will be almost as long as if he just drove home from Reno. Except the snow is so bad he can’t actually drive home from Reno safely 😩😩
•
BUT all is not lost because it means I get to spend a romantic dinner over homemade ragu with @audreypeterson & @toddwagner + three kids instead (...should we make waffles for dessert???). Will you guys be my Valentine? 💕💞
  • {New} Dark chocolate honey fig walnut truffles for you...because I 💜 you. I didn’t realize it when I made them but they’re an aphrodisiac trifecta...which it turns out is probably mostly myth, but it’s fun to think about for Valentine’s Day! Why not go for the sexiest truffle you can? Recipe link in profile!
•
And if you’re not into the Valentine’s Day hoopla, I also happen to know they’re great for stress eating in the middle of the night when both of your kids are screaming...or while snuggling on the couch with your cat and a good bottle of wine • @valleyfig @cookscountry #ValleyFigValentine
  • {New!} A nostalgic breakfast pastry made gluten-free - in partnership with @bobsredmill (ad), these gluten-free strawberry pop tarts with naturally bright pink hibiscus icing are up on the blog just in time for Valentine’s Day - link in profile! •
When Zoella found my new sprinkles on the shelf last week, she asked if she could bring them to daycare to show all her friends. We compromised and I let her put them on the first test batch of these pop tarts. She then made mile-high sprinkle mountains in the center of each pop tart. Though these pastries are so delicious that the icing and sprinkles are totally optional, she’d say otherwise. #betterwithbobs #bakedwithbobs #bobsredmill #weekendbaking #hibiscustea
  • Happy THIRD (!!!) birthday to Zoella Mae! The shift from 2 to 3 has been HUGE and suddenly she’s a threenager with grand ideas and stubborn convictions. And I love her to the 🌙 and back! •
At age 3, she’s into: art, actually helping in the kitchen, 1-to-1 cake-to-sprinkles ratios, the phases of the moon, astronauts, mismatched socks, specifically rainbow zebras, and negotiating by saying, “...Is that a deal? Ok.” •
Her current goals: eat ice cream with her nonny & grandpa, run a race this year, become a doctor when she grows up • #threeyearsold #birthdaygirl
  • It’s Zoella‘s birthday week (3 already!😩) and I’m bringing mini cupcake versions of this healthy banana date cake to daycare on Thursday. I did the same last year and now her teacher calls it “the best cake I’ve ever eaten.” Zoella says it’s so good you might just hug it. Recipe link in profile!

In preparation for her birthday, I ashamed to admit how long I spent looking for my balloon animal pump last night. And I still didn’t find it! I know what it looks like - it’s purple. And I’ve SLID IT SOMEWHERE. Like “where should I keep this? Oh look it slides perfectly RIGHT HERE.” Except I have no idea where that place is now. Sure, I could borrow one (and I did) but it won’t stop me from continuing to hunt for mine in the meantime...I feel unsettled when I misplace things. Also, I don’t recommend practicing balloon animal monkeys while the baby is napping 😳🤦🏼‍♀️

  • {New} Salted caramel cheesecake mini pavlova cakes topped with glazed walnuts • In partnership with @diamondnuts (ad), these crisp pillowy cloud-like meringue cakes are on the blog. A dessert that seems impressively fancy but is surprisingly easy to put together - watch me make them on IGTV! • Recipe link in profile #MadeForHomemade
  • Do you have a favorite back pocket recipe? This cake is mine. Today is #nationalchocolatecakeday and this one bowl chocolate cake is the very best gluten-free chocolate cake. I’ve made it over 200 times over the years in various forms: layer cake, 8-inch round, cupcakes, mini cupcakes, sheet cake, bundt cake. It’s versatile, forgiving, and comes together so easily that I make it from memory now. In fact, it’s so simple, my almost 3 year old, Zoella, made a version to bring to a dinner party last week while I rattled off measurements for her. (She then went rogue and dumped almost an entire tube of sprinkles on top...)
•
This weekend’s version was in the form of 100+ mini cupcakes with whipped marshmallow frosting and graham crackers on top for our neighbor’s 3rd birthday party yesterday.
•
In time for Valentine’s day, get the recipe for the cake AND this naturally pink ombré hibiscus frosting on the blog - link in profile! #feedfeed #food52
  • {New} Weeknight Instant Pot beef ragu. Braising the meat in @luciniitalia’s organic tomato sauces (ad) is my shortcut way to infuse flavor into a beef ragu that tastes like it took hours to make. (Hours I don’t have because my hands are full at dinner time - just last week my toddler LOCKED me in the garage while laughing with her baby brother on the other side of the door) • Needless to say, we need quick hands-off meals over here. This one is the ultimate cozy comfort sauce • Get the recipe link in my profile! • #luciniinspired
